Assistant Youth Services Coordinator

Location: Main Library - Youth Services Office
Hours: Full-Time (37.5 hours), including evening and weekend hours, not job-share eligible
Salary: Grade 13, $22.44/hour
Performs a variety of professional duties as related to the development and provision of Library services to youths ages 10 - 18. Advises and provides support to Intermediate/Teen Librarians system-wide, including, but not limited to: Teen collection development as part of Collection Development Department; meets with Branch Intermediate/Teen staff regularly to discuss collection needs and other service issues; oversees tween and teen programming and services; plans and implements regularly scheduled Youth Services meetings for system Intermediate/Teen Librarians; provides individual orientation and training to newly hired Intermediate/Teen Librarians; plans and designs tween and teen promotional displays; assists in overseeing the public service desk and provides public service to customers in the Main Library teen area; keeps current with teen use of technology; plans and presents system wide programs; actively participates in community engagement opportunities; promotes the Library to community groups through community events; represents the Library to teen/family groups; provides specialized book lists and reader’s advisory; plans tours and instruction for visitor groups; gives book talks; provides training and mentoring to the Intermediate/Teen librarians system wide; substitutes for Tween/Teen and Children’s programming where needed and provides programming to area shelters, schools and other community groups; supervises Youth Services Office in the absence of the Coordinator; supervises student assistant assigned to the Teen Area at Main Library, maintains awareness of developments in the field of Young Adult Librarianship; participates in in-service training, attends seminars and workshops as assigned; and performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Demonstrated comprehensive and broad knowledge of the principles and practices of library science as they apply to Young Adult work; working knowledge of publishers and their practices relating to the Teen materials; a deep and thorough knowledge of teen materials, fiction, nonfiction and music, demonstrated abilities in the following areas: good organizational/time management skills, developing and maintaining effective working relationships with Library staff, groups and professionals within the community; thinking and working independently; speaking and writing effectively; and using sound professional judgment and initiative. Requirements include: a Master of Library and Information Science degree issued by an ALA accredited school of library and information science; extensive experience in the field of Young Adult work preferred; and the ability to travel between Main and Branch libraries and throughout the community and state.
